I am on my way up to Mt. Shasta for the holidays and stoked to have a little time off. GoPro has been a pinnacle sponsor in the progression of Shasta Boyz and after almost of 6 years working together our relationship continues to grow. I have watched this company expand from 3 people to a multi national corporation in just a half decade. Impeccable customer service and an unbeatable product, GoPro continues to push the progression action sports videography into 2012.

GoPro asked me to put together a 100% Hero Reel from Slippery When Wet to promote the original GoPro Hero. This segment boast footage from all over the world including California, Pacific Northwest, Mexico, and relief work in Japan. If you enjoy what you see PLEASE order the film (you can order HERE) and support the project. Be sure to check out the NEW GoPro HERO 2 with not only 1080 HD filming capabilities, but 11 megapixel photos as well. BIG shout out to all the boyz involved with this project especially those featured: Ben Stookesberry, Chris Korbulic, Evan Garcia, Cody Howard, Ryan Knight, Devin Knight, and Drew Duval, there wouldn’t have been a film without yall, thanks for your contribution! More content to look forward to with a part 2 photo update from Japan dropping early Jan. 2012.

After an epic summer season in both the PNW and Cali the crew took a week off to return home, recharge the batteries and then head to Western Canada. British Columbia is one of the premiere destinations for kayaking in the entire world. Massive mountain ranges feed glacier rivers all summer and well into the fall, making BC the late season epicenter.

Fred, Ryan, and myself set off from Bozeman on Friday evening with aspirations to arrive at the Elk river, near Fernie, the next morning. Surprisingly we made it, even with battling a two day hangover. I really had no clue what the to expect from the Elk, other than the famous leap of faith drop. We met up with many local paddlers including Mikkel St Jean Duncan, Glen Carpenter, and some other great Canadian boaters to drop into the Upper and Lower Elk.

This run really surprised me with how much it contained in a short distance. The upper gorge, was stout and really fun. Consisting of a great ling slide, a horseshoe falls, good rapids, a stout 3 series, and a 40 footer we were greeted by BC in a great way. After doing the upper and hucking the falls we routed down the lower gorge enjoying some great class IV and a very steep quick hike out of the canyon. Surprised and stoked on the quality of the river we headed to Fernie to watch some bluegrass music (which we never did), bend it, and wake up to do it all over again!

Austria is a beautiful country but there some areas which a more beautiful. One of these areas is Ost-Tirol esp. the Defereggen valley. It is surrounded by the national park Hohe Tauern and offers some remote whitewater in a narrow gorge on the waterfall run as well as roadside runs on the standard and tunnel section.

After meeting up with Max and Markus we headed to the put-in of the standard section to run it combined with the tunnel section. We had a juicy flow around 60 cm with some pretty holes and cool lines. None of us knew this section which makes a run always something special.

There was some wood in the creek, so we had to be on guard not to get in a nasty situation. The tunnel section starts with some rapids you can run by leapfrogging from one eddy to the next. When you can see the road-bridge you should stop for some scouting. In your desired line there is a tree sticking…then there are two other lines, one of them a chicken line, the other one in the main current. For the second choice you need to use a backwash to slow down for not crashing into the tree. That’s the line we choose. Max had a very smooth run and caught a cool entrance boof.

After that tricky part there’s a fun slide and a couple of meters of easier whitewater before the creek picks up gradient again. We reached the key rapid, 300m of continuous grade IV+ whitewater (at this level). It seems the rapid is not too old. Most of the rocks are crumbly and sharp edged. A swim or roll would definitively have some bloody consequences. Nevertheless me and Max decided to run it. Both of us caught a good line and managed the difficulties without having problems.

The day after the level dropped and we went to the waterfall section. It is a remote gorge with some really cool drops. We had a pretty low level but it was quiete a good run. After some bony first two kilometers the walls narrowed and it was time to scout the first drop. It’s a absolute fun drop with a nasty backwash in the approach and an auto-boof table at the fall. I started, Max followed and last Markus. And then you’re in…in the gorge. It is such a terrific piece of nature, unbelievable.

The second drop is a 20 footer with a nice cross current and a sticky eddy in the approach line. We ran the same order like the first drop but I had to run twice, because Max messed up with my camera and didn’t shot my first run….second run double fun

After we finished up at Defereggenbach we wanted to do a quick afternoon run on Isel river. It a glacier sourced river which usually has high flows on summer afternoons…and yes we did have a high flow. Markus paddled the section once before, so we thought it would become a turbo mission. But after the first bends Markus confessed he couldn’t remember one damn thing about this river

It was a fun. Markus always told something about a left-right bend combination with massive holes…we’re still looking for it. If anyone find’s it give us a call. After all it was an awesome weekend with the guys. Here’s a short edit I made. Enjoy!

So I am a little out of order on things here but Cherry Creek was one of my favorite experiences from my Cali trip and I think some of my favorite photographs as well. It was absolutely the most unique place on the trip. Middle Cherry Creek is a seldom seen section of the Cherry Drainage that begins right below Cherry Lake and above the confluence with the Tuolumne. The normal put-in requires hiking in at the confluence with Lake Eleanor but “luckily” all of the flow was coming out of Cherry Lake so we opted to put in very conveniently right below the dam. We were a large crew of 7-8 people all from different parts but we had no problem meshing together and having a good time. The beginning of the run starts out really mellow with lots of small boulder garden rapids and a couple of portages due to massive boulders blocking the river. Then, out of no-where you roll up on the rapid pictured below. One of the most beautiful views around.

–

–

From here we thought we were off to a great start and our beta told us that even with putting in at the dam it would be a quick day run. The river was broken up with low volume manky boulder rapids and then, as soon as you were getting sick of that, it would open back up into beautiful Cali perfection. Near the bottom of this section, before we reached the confluence, we reached a mini gorge that had some fun moves in the top finishing with a twisting boof with what looked like a punchable hole at the bottom. Most of the crew was down low getting a good scout and me, being a little gun shy of the poison oak (for very good reasons) got two thumbs up from both JJ and Rolf and felt confident that it all went well. I had smooth lines up top, fired off the bottom boof and thought I had the perfect line.

Unfortunately, I was very wrong and after as much rodeo as I could handle I was out of my boat with Watershed bag and camera in hand, not my paddle. Luckily, the rule of the group was if you give two thumbs up and it doesn’t go…you still gotta go. Rolf came down after me, tried a different line, and exited in similar fashion. JJ pulled out some serious points for running the right side and keeping his momentum right and staying dry in his boat. There were no other takers after that. My paddle was recovered thanks to the awesome team effort, and we were back on the water with a lot of time lost, still not yet to the confluence.

JJ firing off the “right” line.

So about a mile or so down the river we reached the confluence. Knowing we had too far to go and not wanting to sleep without gear we decided to leave our kayaks at the confluence, hike back out to the cars and come back down the next day to finish it all off. Luckily it was only straight up, full of thorns and poison oak, and we would get to do it twice. All said and done now, it was worth all the effort. Day two was where all the goods were packed in even with lower than ideal flows. There was so many quality drops and an awesome crew to fire it all off with. It did leave a lasting memory with me as I had an intense outbreak of poison oak for the rest of the trip ending with a trip to the doctor. You know when the doctor, nurse, and everyone around won’t come near you and he gives you a triple dose of prednisone that you did the right thing to get help, especially when you go to the doctor 2 weeks after the trip!

So Middle Cherry Creek is totally a classic if you can catch it. Wear pants, bring extra gear, and be ready for some good times. Here are my photos from the trip. Definitely my favorites, in mostly sequential order that I can remember. Hope ya like.

Ladybugs at the confluence.
