Cali Goods, Part 1
So I got to head to California after an awesome trip to Colorado this year to not only do some awesome creeking but see one of my good friends, John Grace get married to the most awesomest woman ever. Toby McDermott and I loaded up my trusty Subaru and headed west into the sunset.
Solo Middle Falls
For the past few weeks rivers have been rising and dropping up here in Nor Cal. A gauge I always keep my eye on is the McCloud river about 25 mins outside Mt. Shasta. During the middle of last week I saw it was on the rise and tried to rally the troops. Unfortunately everyone has a life or something and can’t drop everything to come huck a perfect 50 footer, so I weighed my options. It was pretty clear the flows were going to peak thursday and I was pretty sure there wouldn’t be another chance for me to run it this year. With those facts in mind I rallied out with Callie and my father to check out the falls. When we arrived at Middle Falls thursday (April 28th) around 4:00pm it quickly felt different from my previous experience there with all the boyz a couple years ago. I looked at it from the top viewing platform and it looked like a little more than half the flow we had during the the previous record high descent in 2009. Dream flows peaked at just over 1700 cfs @ the reservoir that morning. We walked down to the base of the falls to get a better look. From there I saw a really solid line with a great boil at the bottom and felt confident it would be good to go.
Ötz – Wellerbrücke
Wenn im Herbst die Pegel anfangen zu sinken, konzentrieren sich die Paddler in den Alpen auf einige wenige Flüsse. Einer davon ist die Ötz, gerade die Wellerbrücke ist bei allen WW V Paddlern hoch im Kurs. Auch Anton Lehner und ich packten unsere Liquidlogic Jefe’s aufs Dach und begaben uns in DAS Tal. Bei einem perfekten Pegel von 176 cm rockten wir zum aufwärmen um 09 Uhr morgens erst die Mittlere Ötz runter…rockten wohl eher weil es so steinig war, nicht weil die Action so groß war…
Aber unser Vorhaben für den Tag war ja eigentlich auf der Wellerbrücke ein paar schöne Lines in unseren Liquidlogic Jefes hinzulegen und dabei gute Shots mit der Video-Cam zu machen. Also ging es nach einer kleinen Baggerfahrt auf den Bach…bei perfektem herbstlichen Wetter haben wir dann insgesamt 3-4 Stunden unsere Kajaks die Wellerbrück wieder und wieder runtergeschubst.
Mit von der Partie war noch unser Vorarlberger Younster Johannes Simma, der uns tatkräftig beim Filmen unterstützt hat. Thx. Aber nun wollen wir euch das Endprodukt natürlich nicht vorenthalten. Viel Spass mit Antons Video.
